According to a new court document, The Elder Scrolls VI won’t be released on PS5.
As posted on X (formerly Twitter) and verified by The Verge, a document from the court case between Microsoft and the FTC highlighted the many games that Bethesda and its various development teams were working on, had released already, or would be released soon. Within that document was a section about The Elder Scrolls VI, and not only did it state that the game would not likely come out until 2026 it also wouldn’t be available on other platforms. This means it would be exclusive to the Xbox Series X/S and PC.
The State of Elder Scrolls VI
The restriction to Microsoft platforms lines up with recent Bethesda titles, including Starfield, which Todd Howard himself noted was “better” because it was only on one console. He expressed previously that exclusivity has benefits, including focusing on just one version, or two versions when you include PC, of the game versus having to make a version for every system. Microsoft now owns Bethesda, it has stated that certain games from companies they bought wouldn’t be exclusive to their systems. They harped on that key point during the FTC case that they eventually won.
However, regarding Bethesda titles, Microsoft is clearly trying to keep them on its systems alone. One of the other elements of the FTC case was the purchase of Activision Blizzard, which was another big-name purchase the company made and followed its purchase of Bethesda. They stated in the court case that they needed to make these big acquisitions to remain competitive, with Sony and Nintendo “dominating” the market for many generations. By buying companies and making certain titles exclusive, they could bolster their IP library and keep bringing gamers to their systems.
As for The Elder Scrolls VI, Bethesda announced the game in 2018, but it was only recently confirmed that the game was inthe early stages of development, hence the “2026 release window.” The game will likely continue the tradition of taking players to another part of Tamriel and giving them numerous grand adventures. The previous entry, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is hailed as one of the greatest RPGs ever and has been released numerous times over by Bethesda because players love to play it repeatedly.
The Elder Scrolls VI is aiming for a 2026 release date.
